Biography

Livio Mariano is serving as Director of Simulation Data and Digital Twin at Altair Engineering. With a passion for advancing cutting-edge technologies, he spearheads initiatives in artificial intelligence, digital twin development and systems integration. Livio plays a pivotal role in guiding companies towards enhanced efficiency and cost reduction throughout both the design and operational phases. Educationally, Mariano boasts a strong foundation, having earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He further solidified his expertise by obtaining a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a specialized focus on mechatronics and robotics from the prestigious Polytechnic University of Milan.

Title: AI-powered Digital Twins

Abstract

Data-driven approaches are increasingly being used in engineering for system modeling. They significantly enhance the ability to generate efficient models that handle the complexity, nonlinearity, and high dimensionality of modern systems more effectively than traditional methods. Indeed, by learning underlying nonlinear relationships from experimental or simulation data -usually generated from computationally intensive high-fidelity models-, these approaches enable fast modeling and simulations without requiring a full mathematical description of the original system.

This leads to the ability to develop better products faster. AI enables engineers to explore many more ideas in even shorter timeframes. Today, advances in technology and computation have made this field easily accessible to everyone. Altair’s AI solutions are successfully used worldwide, especially by those with no background in data science or programming. In this talk, we will illustrate why AI is so important in the field of Digital Twins and the advantages of its adoption by presenting industrial applications.
